History

Walsh Trucking Services was started in 1925 when founder Michael F. Walsh—a proud man who didn’t mind working seven days a week - began delivering for a stable in Gouverneur, New York. Operating the business with a horse and buggy, he hauled groceries, milk and laundry, eventually expanding the business to Canton, Potsdam and Massena, New York. Later, he added plowing for St. Lawrence County. In the 1930s, Walsh began hauling general freight from New York to New Jersey for the Alcoa plant in Massena. As the company grew, he added tractor trailers and was granted ICC authority to expand into 10 Northeastern states.

Francis E. Walsh, his son, began sweeping floors at Walsh Trucking Services at the age of 10 and worked his way up to a driver by the age of 16. When he returned from his tour of duty with the US Navy in 1951, he began to take a more active role in the company’s administrative duties and added equipment, terminals and warehousing. He retired from the company in 1995, but three months later rejoined Walsh Trucking Services again as a driver.

Michael “Mike” H. Walsh, representing the third generation of family ownership, began the same way his father did—sweeping floors. After he attended college, he opened a terminal in Watertown, New York. Once the terminal was well-established, he moved back to Massena to help his father run the company and prepare Walsh Trucking Services for his father’s retirement. Mike continued the company’s expansion, adding more equipment and concentrating on Full Truckload Service. In , Mike started a brokerage operation to meet the changing needs of Walsh Trucking Services’ customers.

Mike continues today as the president of Walsh Trucking Services. Their son, M. Justin Walsh, started at a young age and was a key figure in the start up success of the brokerage that Mike continues today.
